Dubois vs Wardley first fight Recap: Two Knockdowns, a Comeback and an 11th-Round TKO

On May 9, 2026, at Co-op Live in Manchester, Fabio Wardley made the first defense of his WBO heavyweight title against Daniel Dubois. Wardley dropped Dubois in Round 1 and again in Round 3, but Dubois got up both times, took over with his jab and pressure, and forced referee Howard Foster to stop the fight at 0:28 of Round 11. Dubois left with the WBO belt, and Wardley took the first loss of his professional career. The rematch is Saturday, October 17, at The O2 in London.

What was at stake in Manchester

Wardley arrived as champion after a run of late comebacks: a draw and a first-round knockout in two fights against Frazer Clarke, a 10th-round stoppage of Justis Huni after trailing on the scorecards, and an 11th-round win over Joseph Parker in October 2025 to take the interim WBO title. He was still unbeaten.

Dubois was coming off a fifth-round knockout loss to Oleksandr Usyk in July 2025, which cost him the IBF title he had won by knocking down Anthony Joshua four times in September 2024. He needed a win to get back into the heavyweight title picture.

Round-by-round: how the fight unfolded

Rounds 1–3: Wardley's right hand

Wardley found the right hand almost immediately. With nearly the first punch he landed, an overhand right over Dubois' guard, he put Dubois down in the opening seconds.

Dubois steadied himself in Round 2, moving forward with more discipline, and several unofficial scorecards gave him the round. In Round 3, another right-hand sequence from Wardley put him back on the canvas. Two knockdowns in three rounds suggested a short night for Dubois, but neither turned into a stoppage.

Rounds 4–6: the jab takes over

From Round 4, Dubois started stringing together the jab, the straight right and shorter shots. Wardley kept hunting for one big finishing punch instead of building sequences.

Round 6 was the turning point. Dubois raised his volume in a sustained exchange, and Wardley came out of it with visible facial damage.

Rounds 7–10: the punishment builds

Dubois took command in Rounds 7 and 8, landing more easily and leaning on the jab to set up everything else. By Rounds 9 and 10, Wardley's right eye was badly swollen, and the ringside doctor examined him as the fight went into the final rounds. Wardley kept fighting and stayed on his feet, but he was taking far more than he was landing.

Round 11: the stoppage

Foster stepped in at 0:28 of Round 11. Wardley was upright but no longer defending himself adequately. The official result is a TKO, not a clean knockout, and it followed roughly seven rounds of accumulated damage.

The CompuBox numbers

DuboisWardley
Total punches179/391 (45.8%)97/358 (27.1%)
Jabs92/211 (43.6%)57/209 (27.3%)
Power punches87/180 (48.3%)40/149 (26.8%)
Body punches landed88

Dubois threw only 33 more punches than Wardley but landed 82 more. The gap came from accuracy and shot selection, not volume, and he won both the jab and the power-punch battles.

The round-by-round trend tells the same story. Dubois' overall accuracy was 50% or better in every round from 3 through 7 except one, while Wardley stayed in a range of roughly 20% to 28%. Once Dubois found his rhythm, Wardley rarely got it back.

What the first fight means for the rematch

For Dubois: he showed he can survive Wardley's best punch and win the fight at range. The warning is the start: he was down twice in the first three rounds, and against a puncher with 19 knockouts, another slow opening could be fatal.

For Wardley: he proved he can hurt Dubois early, twice. But he abandoned the jab, loaded up on wide right hands and stayed in front of Dubois after attacking. Hurting Dubois and controlling Dubois turned out to be two different problems.

Why the rematch is happening

Wardley triggered his rematch clause within days of the loss, and Queensberry said the sides would work toward a second fight before the end of 2026. His camp reported no fractures or concussion, with the damage mostly facial. Reports differ on whether he made a precautionary hospital visit. The fight was set for October 17 at The O2, five months after Manchester, after his team ruled out a faster three-month turnaround.

Dubois now enters as the WBO champion, and Wardley as the No. 4 contender in the organization's September rankings. Don't miss our rematch prediction for this fight.
