Who is Christian Mbilli? Record, style and road to the WBC title

When Canelo Álvarez steps into the ring on October 31, the man across from him will be Christian Mbilli, an unbeaten 31-year-old who holds the WBC super middleweight title. He is less famous than his opponent, but he is not a newcomer. Here is where he comes from, how he fights and what his record does and does not prove.

From Cameroon to the Olympics

Mbilli was born in Cameroon and developed as a boxer in France. He represented France at the 2016 Rio Olympics and reached the quarterfinals. He turned professional in 2017 and moved to Montreal.

Montreal and Marc Ramsay

In Montreal he works with Marc Ramsay, a trainer whose résumé includes Artur Beterbiev, Jean Pascal, David Lemieux and Eleider Álvarez.

How Mbilli fights

Mbilli is a pressure fighter. He walks opponents down, throws in waves and invests heavily in body punches. His power shows early: he has stopped two of his last five opponents in the first round, including Mark Heffron with a body shot.

What makes him hard to fight is the combination of volume and physical strength. He wants every round to feel like work.

What can be exploited is how he gets there. He often moves forward on a fairly straight line and accepts exchanges in the middle. That opens the centerline for counters such as the right uppercut and the left hook to the body, which are exactly what Canelo does best. We cover this in detail in our five keys to Canelo vs Mbilli.

His last five fights

May 25, 2024Mark HeffronKO 1, 0:40, body shot
Jan. 13, 2024Rohan MurdockCorner retirement after round 6

Derevyanchenko suffered a biceps injury in that fight. The Martínez draw is the one that tells us the most about Mbilli against a dangerous opponent, and we break it down in what the Martínez draw revealed.

How he became champion

Mbilli did not win the full WBC title in the ring. He won the interim belt by stopping Sulecki in the first round, then kept it with the draw against Martínez. In January 2026, the WBC elevated him to full champion after Terence Crawford was stripped for failing to honor a payment agreement with the organization and later announced his retirement.

That is a fact worth getting right when you write about this fight. Mbilli is the champion, and Canelo is the challenger. But Mbilli has not yet beaten a fighter on Canelo's level.

What his record does and does not tell us

An unbeaten record with 24 knockouts is impressive. The 143 professional rounds tell a second story: he is young for a world champion in wear and tear, and he has fewer miles on the odometer than Canelo, who has 532.

The same number says he is less tested. Nobody has asked him to deal with Canelo's counterpunching, experience and punch selection over 12 rounds. His chin has not been proven against a puncher at this level either.

What Mbilli has said

Mbilli has promised to press from the first second to the last and has said he believes Canelo is declining with age. Canelo has called his style simple while admitting it will still be a hard fight.

The bottom line

Mbilli is a real threat, not a stepping stone. He is fit, physical and busy, and the style that wore Martínez down in the early rounds can cause problems for a 36-year-old coming off elbow surgery. He also has defensive holes, and those are the doors Canelo walks through. Read our full prediction and analysis for how we see it playing out.
